Storied Seed Bank (ongoing)
An ongoing participatory community project and pop-up exhibition animating the importance of plants in people’s lives and the connections we have to them in the 21st century.
This project is a work in progress and continues to grow. It is a collection of short audio recordings lasting 1 to 3 minutes.
Traditionally our living connection with plants revolved around knowledge passed down from generation to generation. This included how plants could be used for shelter, fuel, food both grown and foraged, craft and medicine. Much has changed, some knowledge has been lost and new knowledge found; but plants continue to inform our language, folklore, and culture. Plants are part of the seasonal landscape we understand and live in and link us to places and to the people in our lives.
Exeter Seed Bank holds seeds from the Storied Seed Bank such as heirloom beans, broad beans, nasturtiums, nigella seeds, Bavarian radish, hollyhocks (originally brought from Cypress as seeds) and pumpkin seeds.
The Storied Seed Bank is open for anyone to explore when it is on display. It may be displayed in public places such as libraries, schools, community centres, art centres, wildlife events, National Trust properties and festivals.
Check out the audio file below to see an example of the project - you can listen to more stories over here.
